EUGENE, OR (November 21, 2013) The Freeman Foundation has announced that it will renew a $100,000 grant to support undergraduate and graduate students conducting internships in East and Southeast Asia. 

The funds, administered by the UO’s Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS), provide UO students with grants of up to $6,000.

The grants allow students to choose an internship in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam.

The University of Washington (Seattle) is sponsoring its seventh annual “Model EU,” to take place February 7-8, 2014.  This is a national event, with undergraduate EU teams recruited from universities around the country. 

The U of O has been invited to send a team of two participants. The European Union Center at UW and the UO European Studies program will cover participants’ expenses. This will include travel to and from Seattle, hotel lodging and at least two meals.

EUGENE, Ore. — (Nov. 11, 2013) — A University of Oregon student has been chosen as a finalist for the Rhodes scholarship, while two more UO students have been selected as finalists for the Marshall scholarship.

Mika Weinstein was chosen as a finalist for the Rhodes scholarship and will interview in Seattle on Nov. 22. Souvanny Miller and Maggie Witt were named finalists for the Marshall scholarship and will interview at the British Consulate-General in San Francisco on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

On Friday, November 8, Typhoon Haiyan hit the island nation of the Philippines, affecting the country’s 9.5 million people across the archipelago. According to the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the storm displaced an estimated 600,000 people, may have killed more than 10,000, and destroyed 70 to 80 percent of structures in its path.

In the wake of this devastating event, the University of Oregon and its Office of International Affairs offer our deepest sympathy to the people of the Philippines.

 

OIA in conjunction with OU Alumni have created the newsletter Global Ducks. The Fall Edition of the newsletter features a significant set of news related to events, achievements and news about UO alum worldlwide and the efforts of the Office of Internaitonal Affairs at home.

EUGENE, Oregon (October 17, 2013) – The University of Oregon announced this week the launch of its new Global Studies Institute (GSI), a home for internationally oriented centers, programs and new initiatives within the Office of International Affairs (OIA).

GSI’s mission is to support internationally oriented research centers, programs, and initiatives that enhance faculty research, enrich the student experience, globalize the campus, and promote the University of Oregon’s academic excellence with partners around the world.

On Thursday, November 7, 2013, 4-5:30 pm in the Knight Library Browsing Room, Professor Pheng Cheah from UC Berkeley will present a talk at the University of Oregon, titled “Postcolonial Literature as World Literature: World Heritage Preservation and the Unworlding of the Subaltern World in Amitav Ghosh's The Hungry Tide.”

A reception will follow.
