 International Student and Scholar Services

ISSS manages federal visa issuance & compliance for international students, faculty, staff and visitors. ISSS is also a home away from home for international students, employees and visitors.

Hire International Faculty or Staff

If your unit is hiring an international employee, ISSS will help you with the visa (usually H-1B). Consult early with us if your search could produce international finalists – we can help make the initial hire and later retention smooth if we get involved right at the beginning of the hiring process!

Host An International Visiting Scholar

Reach out to ISSS is you are bringing international visitors to campus for any reason. We'll help you with the visa (usually J1) and help you navigate other rules to ensure a warm welcome and a smooth visit.

J-1 Exchange Visitor Program


Host An International Student Intern

We are here to help your department or lab host an international student intern (J1 student intern visa). Interns should be in a structured work-based learning experience that is tied to their degree program. Minimum duration 3 weeks; maximum 12 months.

 Global Education Oregon (GEO)

Global Education Oregon is the UO’s study abroad office. We make the world the classroom for UO students, by offering more than 200 programs in 60 countries with 40 scholarships.

Faculty-led Study Abroad Program Development

GEO helps faculty develop oversees programs that tie into majors and core education, while providing immersive cross-cultural, experiential learning. We connect you to GEO centers and partners worldwide. Faculty proposals are reviewed by GEO and academic unit leadership.

Our Global Risk Manager offers faculty resources, and guidance for safely running study abroad programs. We consult on safety and risk for faculty global research travel, and other UO activities.

Helping Your Students Fund Global Education

GEO offers over 40 scholarships, totaling about $400,000 per year. GEO partners with UO Financial Aid to allow students access to as much of their UO scholarships and financial aid for study abroad as possible.
