A Message on International Student Visas

Dennis Galvan, vice provost for global engagement, sent the following message to international students, faculty, and staff on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

Dear Colleagues,
In the last few weeks, the US Department of Homeland Security has terminated the visa status of international students across the US and also at the UO. Four of our students have experienced such termination as of this writing.

Like other universities, federal officials did not tell us these status terminations. We discovered them through our regular records check in the federal international student database. We check these records daily for any new terminations and we will notify students if their record is terminated.

Please know that the staff who support international students in the Division of Global Engagement have been working tirelessly and directly with the impacted students. We are connecting them to all our advising and support resources, informing them of options for legal representation, while doing all we can to protect their privacy.

We are also mindful of how fear and anxiety from these events ripple out across widening concentric circles surrounding the students, to others who worry if they might be next; everyone in our international community; those who teach, advise and support our international students; and so many advocates and allies.

Information sessions are scheduled for members of our community who are most at risk to share facts, realistic assessments of possibilities, and support resources. Please reach out to me or intl@uoregon.edu if you’d like to find out more.

We are also in daily contact with our counterparts in the Big Ten, other universities, and our professional associations to gather up to date information, compare notes and identify emerging patterns. We are sharing information directly to interested parties and on our Immigration FAQ page.

If you are feeling at risk, please reach out to directly to me, or to intl@uoregon.edu, for an easy consult on your immigration or visa status and best options.

The University of Oregon has been and will remain a welcoming place for international students, in no small part because of the commitment to global welcome of so many faculty, staff and students.

Sincerely,

Dennis Galvan
