University of Oregon (UO) President Michael Schill hosted a delegation of five representatives from East China Normal University (ECNU) at his residence.

The ECNU delegation was led by Dr. Ren Youqun, ECNU Vice President and Dr. Zhou Yong, Director of Confucius Institute Office. They were joined by Si Yang, Director of ECNU Supervision Office, Zhuang Yu, ECNU Deputy Dean of School of Foreign Languages, and Li Yansa, Office Director of Institute of Global Chinese Language Teacher Education.

UO senior Polly Irungu is among 12 black college journalism students nationwide selected for this summer’s Student Multimedia Project in Washington, D.C.

Sponsored by the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the multimedia project brings together a cadre of journalism and public relations students to cover the combined convention of the two associations. Irungu will receive an all-expenses-paid fellowship for the trip.

U.S. news coverage of unaccompanied immigrant children lacks quantity and quality, says Ricardo Valencia, a doctoral student in media studies at the UO.

Valencia's research is the focus of a recent article in El Tiempo Latino, a Spanish-language publication of The Washington Post.

The University of Oregon once again earns a spot among the top five institutions for Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships, with a total of 18 recipients who will study abroad for summer 2016.

“Our Gilman Scholars continue to have a strong and increasing presence at a national level,” said Kathy Poole, executive director of Global Education Oregon (GEO).

Two UO students have been selected to receive the prestigious David L. Boren Scholarship to study abroad during the 2016-17 academic year.

Ava Jamerson and Elizabeth Baer will each receive $20,000 in funding towards their year abroad. Jamerson will be participating in the Chinese Flagship Capstone program in Nanjing, China and Baer will be attending Japan Women’s University in Tokyo, Japan on an exchange program.

Foreign Language and International Studies Day (FLIS) will be May 6.^. This day-long celebration is the largest event dedicated to language and culture in Oregon. More than 1100 high school students and teachers from throughout Oregon come to the UO campus for a day of language, culture, and entertainment presented by UO faculty, staff, and students. Presentations range from a show by UO’s dance troupe, “K-Aire” to the more classical world of “Le Théâtre Français”. And everything in between—study abroad, Russian Food, Chinese Calligraphy, Music of the Andes and much more.

1,500 students across the nation applied to Fund for Education Abroad's Scholarship. Among all the applicants, UO student Lukas Heaton was selected to receive $1,562 to help make his goal of studying in Rosario, Argentina happen. Lukas will be participating in GEO's Spanish Language in Rosario program this summer.
