The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program announced the fall 2013 and Academic Year scholarships recipients. Once more, the University of Oregon ranks among the highest producers of Gilman Scholars with nine recipients for fall 2013, tying for 8th in the country.
The UO tied with University of Wisconsin Madison, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Central Washington University and California State University Monterey Bay, yet outperformed institutions such as Oregon State University, University California Los Angeles, and San Diego State University.
“Our office continues to excel in the service and support we provide our students as they pursue distinguished scholarship opportunities such as the Gilman International Scholarship Program, ” says Cari Vanderkar Moore, director of UO Study Abroad Programs. “It has been a year of tremendous growth for UO Study Abroad Programs. Student participation has reached an all-time high and we expect more students to seek study and internship opportunities abroad to meet their educational and professional goals.”
By comparison, UO success rates for this coveted scholarship were slightly above the national average. UO succeeded in obtaining 9 recipients out of 26 candidates (a 35% success rate), compared to the national rate of 850/2800 (30%).
During the 2013 fall term, the UO Gilman recipients will be participating in study abroad programs and internships in Argentina, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Russia, Spain, and Sweden.
A total of eight UO students studied abroad using a Gilman Scholarship in fall 2012. During the 2011-2012 academic year, the UO produced a total of 33 Gilman Scholars.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.
