The Global Studies Institute hosts and supports UO’s internationally-oriented research centers, programs, and initiatives. Our goal is to enhance faculty research, enrich student global engagement with faculty, and promote the University of Oregon’s academic excellence at home and with partners around the world.

Funding Opportunities

Global Oregon Faculty Collaboration Funds, Global Oregon Faculty Research Travel Grants, or the Global Oregon and Oregon Translation Center funds for graduate and undergraduate students.

 International Student and Scholar Services

International Student & Scholar Services is the home base for all matters related to international faculty, staff and students. ISSS staff are experts in federal regulations, visa compliance and are a home away from home for international students and scholars.

Hire International Faculty or Staff

The H-1B visa allows foreign nationals to temporarily work in the US in specialty occupations for up to six years. Most teaching or research faculty positions are eligible for H-1B sponsorship.

Host An International Visiting Scholar or International Student Intern

The J1 Research Scholar/Professor programs allows foreign nationals to temporarily work full-time for up to 5 years.

The J1 Student Intern programs allows foreign students to participate in structured work-based learning experiences that fulfill educational objectives for their degree program at their academic institution. Foreign students must be actively enrolled and pursuing a degree at a postsecondary academic institution outside the United States to participate in the J-1 Student Intern Program.The minimum length of time for an internship is 3 weeks and the maximum length of time is 12 months. No extensions are permitted.

 Global Education Oregon (GEO)

Global Education Oregon is the study abroad unit for the University of Oregon. By offering more than 200 programs in 60 countries with 40 scholarships, the world is our student's classroom.

Faculty-led Study Abroad Program Development

GEO collaborates with UO faculty, in tandem with their college/school and departments, to create academically integrated global education faculty-led experiences for their students. GEO works with you on the development of programs that ensure academic integration while providing cultural expertise and access to a network of GEO centers and designated sites around the world. GEO’s biannual faculty proposal process allows for departments and colleges to both assess and support faculty’s proposals while also allowing for a comprehensive and fair review.

Faculty Consultation

GEO staff are available throughout the year to provide information and guidance on global education program opportunities for faculty and their students. Faculty who intend to submit a study abroad program proposal to GEO, or have questions about new kinds of global experiences for their students, are welcome to consult with our staff. GEO has a wealth of information on available locations, current programs, our international partners, costs, trends in study abroad both at the UO and more broadly, etc.

Global Risk Management

The GEO Global Risk Manager provides faculty with essential services, resources, and guidance for safely leading and participating in study abroad programs and other UO international travel.


Dedicated Marketing Support

The communications and outreach team can help you spread the word about global education opportunities to your students. This includes creating print and digital content, social media campaigns, classroom visits, presentations, and email messages tailored to your classes.

Funding for Global Education

GEO strives to provide students with as many funding opportunities for study abroad as possible by offering over 40 scholarships. GEO works in partnership with the UO Financial Aid and Scholarships office to allow students access to as much of their UO scholarships and financial aid for study abroad as possible.
