African Studies Lecture Series: Dr. Kemi Balogun

Please join us Tuesday, February 17th, from 12-1.15 pm in the

Knight Library Browsing Room for the fifth lecture this year in the African Studies Lecture Series. The talk, titled “Beauty Diplomacy and Entrepreneurial Masculinity: State and Market in the Nigerian Beauty Pageant Industry” will be given by our own Dr. Kemi Balogun from the University of Oregon.  It is the second of three lectures this term under the theme of “Political Economy in Africa.”

Kemi Balogun is Assistant Professor in the Departments of Women’s and Gender Studies & Sociology. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley with a Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Her research focuses on gender, globalization, nationalism, race/ethnicity, and migration. She has published articles in outlets such as Ethnicities and Gender & Society. She is currently working on a book examining the Nigerian beauty pageant industry in light of the country’s economic and political transitions.
