President Karl Scholz sent the following message to the UO Community on October 13, 2023.

Dear University of Oregon community members,

Many university presidents have already released statements about the horrors of the genocidal actions of Hamas last weekend and the response by Israel. I’ve been slow in finding the words to convey the depths of my sadness and concern in a way that captures the magnitude of the terror and the unfathomable loss of life. I condemn genocide. I condemn the killing of innocent civilians.

On Monday, October 9, 2023 Interim Vice President for Student life, Kris Winters sent a message to UO Students.

Dear University of Oregon students,

The loss of life and violence in Israel and Gaza is concerning to many people in our university community. The University of Oregon stands in support of our students, staff, faculty, and alumni affected by the war. We express sympathy and compassion to the Jewish, Israeli, and Palestinian communities impacted by the war and resulting loss, suffering, and uncertainty.

On September 30, the US House of Representatives approved a bipartisan short-term funding bill, known as a continuing resolution. The bill, which was approved by the US Senate and signed into law by President Joe Biden, provides the necessary funding to keep the federal government in operation for an additional 45 days, buying Congress more time to pass long-term funding legislation. However, UO leadership continues to monitor the situation.

Eligible faculty members, postdocs and administrators can still apply for awards
