UO student Megan Garland has been selected as recipient of the prestigious David L. Boren Scholarship to study in China.
Garland, a double major in Chinese and International Studies, will study at Nanjing University for the first half of the year and participate in an internship related to international diplomacy the second half of the 2015-2016 school year.
“After my year in China," Garland said, “I may extend my stay to continue working, but plan on doing Peace Corps shortly after. After Peace Corps, I will attend graduate school focusing in international aid and development.”
Boren Awards provide U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with resources and encouragement to acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to the future security and stability of our nation. In exchange for funding, Boren award recipients agree to work in the federal government for a period of at least one year.
“The National Security Education Program,” according to Dr. Michael A. Nugent, NSEP Director, “is helping change the U.S. higher education system and the way Americans approach the study of foreign languages and cultures.”
The Boren Scholarship award can be up to $20,000 for a year-long program. This year, the Institute of International Education, which administers the awards on behalf of NSEP, receive 750 applications from undergraduate students for the Boren Scholarship and 171 were awarded; 385 graduate students applied for the Boren Fellowship and 101 were awarded.
At the University of Oregon, 20 percent of the applicants received the Boren Scholarship. In the past ten years, the University of Oregon has had 1-4 Boren recipients every year.
Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. http://borenawards.org/
