President Schill surprises 22 international students for Thanksgiving

UO’s President Schill attended a Thanksgiving gathering of international students at a local Eugene residence. The welcoming hosts were Paul and Susie Harvey, a long-time host family affiliated with the local nonprofit Friendship Foundation for International Students (FFIS). The Harveys host an annual Thanksgiving bash, opening their home to all of their past international students they have hosted over the years. This year, ten countries were represented among the attendees.

“It was a real treat to host the President at our home,” Paul Harvey said. “The students were honored to share the meal with him. There was a lot of laughter and photo taking. President Schill made it a point to talk to everyone in attendance. He’s invited back next year!”

The Harveys are one of the many local families who open their home to international students for Thanksgiving. UO international students are able to experience a traditional American holiday because of host families like the Harveys.

In addition to a short-term homestay program, FFIS also hosts a Conversation Friend Program and a Share Thanksgiving Program. Through their programs and activities, FFIS builds trust and fosters goodwill between the local community and University of Oregon international students, alumni, scholars and their families. FFIS families have been hosting international students since 1950.

Thank you to President Schill for making this Thanksgiving a memorable celebration for 22 international students!
