AEIS (Academic English for International Students) is a program designed to help newly-admitted international students develop expertise in English for academic purposes while they are studying at the University of Oregon. AEIS classes are regular credit bearing courses at the UO, and count towards University of Oregon graduation requirements (4 credits per course). AEIS is a part of an international student's degree requirement at the UO and should be completed during the first year of enrollment.
All new international students must satisfy the AEIS during their first year at the University of Oregon.
All new students who enter the UO with one of the following conditions will have satisfied the requirement*:
Students who do not meet the requirement by one of the above qualifications must meet the AEIS requirement by taking the AEIS placement test and taking any appropriate classes based on the results of the test. Please read below for more details.
*Note: Policy change occurred effective Summer 2011. For students who were admitted to the UO before Summer 2011 please contact the AEIS adviser below for details on their requirements.
All new international students entering the UO without meeting the AEIS requirement are required to take an AEIS placement exam to determine which AEIS classes, if any, they will be required to take to complete their degree program at the UO. The AEIS placement test is conducted during the mandatory International Student Orientation (ISO).
The test is computer adaptive and includes a reading, writing and listening section. It costs $20 and will be automatically charged to the student's UO account. The test is used only to determine the AEIS classes a student is required to take. The test has no effect on the student's overall standing within the University.
Students may only take the AEIS placement test one time, no exceptions. AEIS instructors will give a brief re-exam during the first week of every AEIS class to ensure that all students are in the correct course level.
AEIS courses are taught by faculty in the American English Institute (AEI) in the Linguistics Department. AEIS helps international students develop expertise in English for academic purposes while they are taking other classes at the University of Oregon. Course descriptions are available.
AEIS courses are a part of a students degree requirements at the UO. They are 4 credits each and count as elective credits for a students degree program. AEIS courses cost the same amount as any regular 4 credit class.
1. Students must complete all of their AEIS classes during their first academic year at the UO.
2. Students may register for a maximum of 2 AEIS classes per term.
AEIS course schedules are available online.
Students can register for AEIS courses as soon as they are eligible to register at the UO and have received their AEIS placement testing results. AEIS results will be distributed during International Student Orientation. Students register for all classes at the UO online via Duckweb following a meeting with an academic adviser.
If the AEIS course you are required to take is full, please continue to check for openings again before and during the first week of classes. As students drop, add and test out of courses, seats will open up. To increase your chances of enrolling in one of these spots check back several times a day on Duckweb for openings.
