Apply to the UO

In order to study at the University of Oregon you will first need to apply for admission and be admitted. If you are a graduate student you may be accepted by your academic department before the UO Office of Admissions officially admits you.

Transferring to the University of Oregon (referred to as "Transfer-In")

If you are currently attending another U.S. college, university, English school or high school, or you just recently finished your program, you must contact your current or previous school and ask them to TRANSFER your SEVIS I-20 record to the University of Oregon. The transfer release date is usually the LAST day of your final term of study. Once your SEVIS I-20 record is released to the UO, we will be able to view your record and print a new I-20 for you.

Please DOWNLOAD the Transfer-In Form and give the form to your current or previous school to complete, sign and fax to 541-346-1232, or scan and email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . DO NOT WAIT to complete the Transfer-In form. We need to know the transfer release date of your SEVIS I-20 record and we need to know if you will be traveling outside the U.S. before you begin your program at the University of Oregon.  (A hard copy of the Transfer-In form and procedures will also be mailed to you with your UO notice of admission letter.)

IMPORTANT NOTE: If your current or previous school has "completed" or "terminated" your SEVIS record, then it cannot be transferred and we must create a new "initial" I-20 for you. You must contact your international programs office about the transfer of your SEVIS record immediately so that we know whether your SEVIS record will be transferred to the UO or not.

Receive your "Transfer Pending" I-20 or DS-2019

If you are staying in the U.S., you do not need your I-20 before arriving at the University of Oregon. You will pick up your new I-20 from our office, International Affairs (333 Oregon Hall) after you arrive and register for classes.

If you are planning to travel outside the U.S. prior to beginning your study at the UO, we must mail you a "transfer pending" I-20 for re-entry to the U.S. Please provide a COMPLETE outside U.S. mailing address and international phone number on the Transfer-In form so that we know where to mail your new I-20 after your school has released your SEVIS record to the UO. Please remember that we cannot print and mail your new I-20 until your current or previous school has transferred your SEVIS record to the UO, and this date is usually the last day of your final term of your program.

Visa Interview

If you are a transfer student and you leave the U.S. before coming to the UO, you may be required to apply for a new F-1 visa. Be sure to check the expiration date of your visa before you make travel plans. If you must apply for a new visa, be sure to schedule your visa interview in advance and bring your new UO transfer-pending I-20 with you to your visa interview. For more information about the visa interview, click here.

If your visa is valid you may leave the U.S. and re-enter using the new UO transfer-pending I-20 without applying for a new visa. Your visa will always show your first school that you attended in the U.S. until it expires and you apply for a new visa. If you have questions about your visa or travel, please email the SEVIS Coordinator at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
