What is AEIS?AEIS (Academic English for International Students) is a program designed to help newly-admitted International students develop expertise in English for academic purposes while they are studying at the University of Oregon. AEIS classes are taken in conjunction with other regular UO classes, and count towards regular University of Oregon graduation requirements (4 credits per course). AEIS courses are taught by trained-faculty in the American English Institute (AEI) and provide support to International students who need additional help in order to fully participate and be successful in their academic classes. Who is required to take the AEIS placement test?Undergraduate Students whose native language is not English are required to take the AEIS placement test. The only exceptions are for undergraduate students with TOEFL scores of 575 or above (88 IBT, or 7 IELTS), who are only required to take the writing portion of the placement test. Undergraduate transfer students with WR 121 transfer equivalency credit are only required to take the language structure portion of the AEIS placement test. Only undergraduate students with both a qualifying TOEFL score and WR 121 transfer equivalency are exempted from both parts of the test. Graduates Students whose native language is not English are required to take the AEIS placement test. The only exceptions are for graduate students with with TOEFL scores of 575 or above (88 IBT, or 7 IELTS), or who already have a degree from an accredited U.S. university, who are exempted from taking both parts of the placement test. Exchange and Sponsored Students such as Fulbright scholars and exchange students who are not seeking a degree from the University of Oregon are not required to take the AEIS placement test. Exchange and sponsored students may still participate in the AEIS program however, if they would like the additional support. In these cases exchange and sponsored students must then take the AEIS placement test during ISO to help determine which (if any) AEIS classes would be beneficial to them. Will my results on the AEIS placement test affect my overall acceptance or standing at the university? No, the AEIS placement test results only determine which (if any) AEIS courses International students need to take during their first academic year at the University of Oregon. They have no bearing whatsoever on the student's overall standing within the university.
