At the University of Oregon, you will find several sources of financial aid for international students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Each year, the UO awards over one million dollars in financial aid and scholarships to international students.

International Affairs administers a variety of scholarships and grants specifically targeted for international students. 1. International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) Tuition Scholarships

The ICSP scholarship awards 30-40 competitive scholarships to international students each year. Scholarships apply to tuition only and range from $6,000-$20,000 per year. The ICSP scholarship has a cultural service component which requires students to give presentations about their home country to children, community organizations, and UO students, faculty and staff. ICSP scholarships are based on financial need, academic merit, and the ability to make presentations to diverse groups of people. ICSP scholarships are renewable. Eligibility: Applicants may be new or current UO students. New students must apply for admission to UO by February 15, 2010. Current students must be enrolled in a full-time course of study at the UO with a nonimmigrant visa (F-1 or J-1) and have a minimum UO grade point average of 2.5 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduate students.

Note: ICSP Nascence Scholarship: This supplemental scholarship is automatically awarded to a selected student from China or Hong Kong who is also a recipient of the ICSP scholarship. This scholarship was created in honor of Fredric Leung, former ICSP recipient and UO alumnus. No application is required.
2. International Dean's Excellence Award (IDEA)
The IDEA scholarship is a merit-based, partial-tuition scholarship awarded to new international undergraduate applicants entering in the fall (September). The scholarship is valued at $4,000-$8,000 and is renewable each year based on academic performance.
Eligibility: This is a merit-based scholarship based on official academic records submitted with the UO admissions application. Applicants must be new international students admitted for fall term (September) only.

How to Apply: To be considered for the IDEA scholarship, applicants must apply for admission to the UO before the priority admissions deadline of February 15, 2010. There is no separate scholarship application required.
3. International Student Work-Study Program

The International Student Work-Study Program grants more than 50 work-study awards (ranging from $500-$3,000) each year, to eligible international students with financial need. Students who receive these awards can compete for on-campus work-study jobs during the academic year. Students are not guaranteed on-campus jobs, but opportunities for on-campus employment will increase.

Eligibility: Applicants may be new or current UO international students. New students must apply for admission to UO by February 15, 2010. Current students must be enrolled in a full-time course of study at the UO with a nonimmigrant visa (F-1 or J-1) and have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduate students. Previous work-study award recipients must re-apply to receive funding for the 2010-2011 academic year.

4. International Affairs Endowed Scholarships

International Affairs grants 15-20 competitive cash-based scholarships each year to international students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit.

Eligibility: Applicants may be new or current UO international students. New students must apply for admission to UO by February 15, 2010. Current students must be enrolled in a full-time course of study at the UO with a nonimmigrant visa (F-1 or J-1) and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

GENERAL

Pressman Family Scholarship: Honoring the Pressman family. One scholarship of approximately $750 may be awarded each year. New and continuing UO international students may apply.

Jim and Jean Tattersall International Student Scholarship: Honoring Jim and Jean Tattersall, one scholarship of approximately $1,500 may be awarded each year. New and continuing international students may apply.

GRADUATING STUDENTS

Kenneth S. Ghent Scholarship: Honoring Dr. Kenneth S. Ghent, former director of International Affairs. Several scholarships of approximately $3,500 each may be awarded each year. Applicants must be entering the final year of their UO degree program. A degree audit is required.

AFRICA

John Haines African Student Scholarship: Established by Dr. John Haines, a Eugene ophthalmologist. Two scholarships of approximately $2,000 each may be awarded each year. New and continuing students from Africa may apply.

Prakash Mulani African Student Scholarship: Established by UO alumnus Prakash Mulani ’87. One scholarship of approximately $2400 may be awarded each year. New and continuing students from Africa may apply, with preference given to students from Kenya, Tanzania, or South Africa.

Dr. Dapo and Mrs. Lillie Popoola African Student Scholarship: Established by UO alumnus Dapo Popoola ’71 and wife Lillie Popoola. One scholarship of approximately $1000 may be awarded each year.
New and continuing students from Africa may apply.

INDIA

Sushil Jajodia Indian Student Scholarship: Established by UO alumnus Sushil Jajodia, '77. Two scholarship awards of approximately $2,000 each may be awarded to Indian students each year. New and continuing students from India may apply.

Jhamandas Watumull Scholarship: The Jhamandas Watumull Fund is a foundation dedicated to better understanding between the United States and India. Four scholarships of approximately $1000 each may be awarded each year. New and continuing students from India may apply.

JAPAN

Alumni Association (UOAA) Japan Chapter Scholarship: The UOAA Japan Chapter awards a scholarship of approximately $1,000 to a current UO Japanese student each year. Applicants must be entering their junior or senior year of study to be eligible. An essay and resume are required in addition to the scholarship application.

KOREA

Alumni Association (UOAA) Korea Chapter Scholarship: The UOAA Korea Chapter awards a scholarship of approximately $1,000 to a current UO Korean student each year. Applicants must be entering their junior or senior year of study to be eligible. An essay and resume are required in addition to the scholarship application.

NEPAL

Helen and Barney Wood Nepalese Student Scholarship: Established by Dr. Wood, a former UO professor of Education. One scholarship of approximately $2,000 may be awarded each year. New and continuing students from Nepal may apply. This is a supplemental award for a student who receives a tuition scholarship from another source, such as a Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF), the International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) or other UO tuition scholarship programs. This scholarship is renewable each year until graduation, provided the student maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA and can demonstrate financial need each year.

OCEANIA

Maradel Gale/Florence Krummel Pacific Island Scholarship: Established by Maradel Krummel Gale, University of Oregon alumna, (J.D., 1974) and associate professor emerita of sustainable community development in the Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management (PPPM). One scholarship of approximately $3000 may be awarded each year. New and continuing students from the Pacific Island nations of Micronesia, Polynesia or Melanesia, including the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu may apply. Selection of recipients for this scholarship shall give priority to applicants who are fluent in a language indigenous to the islands, such as Belauan, Yapese, Satawalese, Marshallese, Samoan, Pohnpeian, Cook Islands Maori, Fijian, Bislama, or other recognized island languages.

SCOTLAND

John Taylor More Scholarship: Established in honor of John Taylor More, native of Scotland and beloved father of UO alumnus Iain More ’67. One scholarship of up to $20,000 may be awarded each year. Entering students from Scotland. Preference given to students from Nairn Academy.

SINGAPORE, HONG KONG & ASEAN COUNTRIES

Charles A. and Jackie Swenson Scholarship: Established by UO alumnus Richard Seow '83, in honor of his Eugene host family. The Swensons welcomed more than fifteen Singaporeans into their home and nurtured lifelong connections with UO international students. One or more scholarships of up to $10,000 may be awarded to entering undergraduate students from Singapore, Hong Kong and ASEAN countries each year. Preference will be given to new undergraduates from Singapore & Hong Kong. This scholarship is renewable each year until graduation.

THAILAND
Pin Julaphongs Thai Student Scholarship: In memory of former UO student Pin Julaphong. One scholarship of approximately $1,000 may be awarded to a Thai student each year. New and continuing students from Thailand may apply.

TURKEY
Johan & Emel Mehlum Family Scholarship: Established by Johan Mehlum, a native of Norway and founding CEO of Siuslaw Bank, and wife Emel Mehlum, a native of Turkey. One scholarship of approximately $6,000 may be awarded each year. This scholarship is only available for an entering freshman from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey.
Islam Family Foundation Scholarship: Established in honor of Dr. Ahmet R. Islam, native of Turkey and beloved father of UO alumna Hilary Islam Harter ’86. One or more scholarships of approximately $1000-$4000 may be awarded each year. New and continuing students from Turkey may apply.
5. Loans

International Affairs has limited funds available for short-term emergency loans to current University of Oregon international students. A typical loan is approximately $200 and must be repaid within 90 days. For further information, please make an appointment with an International Student Adviser in International Affairs, 330 Oregon Hall. Loans may be made at any time during a student’s academic program.

Financial Resources Form

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT FINANCIAL NEED: Several of the scholarships listed below require proof of financial need. Domestic students can file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as proof of financial need. International students are not eligible to file a FAFSA. Instead, international students in non-immigrant visa status can provide proof of financial need by submitting a icon Financial Resources Form to the Office of International Affairs. (A Financial Aid Worksheet is included in all International Affairs scholarship applications, but is not included in scholarship applications from other UO departments. If you are applying for more than one scholarship, complete one Financial Aid Worksheet and make copies for each scholarship application.)

 

OTHER UNIVERSITY OF OREGON SOURCES OF FINANCIAL AID

Many colleges, schools and departments at the University of Oregon offer undergraduate and graduate scholarships and awards. Students should contact the department for their major about the availability of financial support. A list of departmental scholarships is available online.

General University Scholarship Program

International students are eligible to apply for general university scholarships which range from $1,000 to $2,700. These scholarships are extremely competitive and are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement.

Eligibility: Available to new or current UO students. New students must apply for admission to UO by January 15, 2010. Current students must be enrolled in a full-time course of study at the UO with a nonimmigrant visa (F-1 or J-1) and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
How to Apply:
• Incoming freshman will automatically be considered for General University Scholarships by completing the UO Undergraduate Admission Application by January 15, 2010. No separate General University Scholarship application is required for incoming freshman.
• All non-freshman applicants must complete the University Scholarship Application, including essays and activities summary, and submit it to the UO Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. Please visit the General University Scholarship Program website for more information.

Application Deadline: Incoming freshman must apply for UO admission by January 15, 2010 - separate scholarship application required; February 16, 2010 for all non-freshman, including incoming transfer, graduate and law students.
OFFICE OF ACADEMIC ADVISING, 364 Oregon Hall
Ella Travis Edmunson and Mercy Travis Davis Scholarship

Several scholarships of approximately $6,000 may be awarded each year.

Eligibility: Applicants must be continuing undergraduate UO students who can demonstrate leadership qualities through campus and community involvement, hold a minimum 3.25 GPA, and can demonstrate financial need.
How to Apply: Applicants should pick up a scholarship application from the Office of Academic Advising, 364 Oregon Hall. Scholarship applications will be available beginning winter term. To demonstrate financial need, international students in non-immigrant visa status (F-1 or J-1) must have a 2010-2011 Financial Aid Worksheet on file with the Office of International Affairs.

ROBERT D. CLARK HONORS COLLEGE, 320 Chapman Hall
Shephard Family Scholarship

The number and amount of awards will vary depending on the number of qualified students and available resources.

Eligibility: This scholarship is available to 1) international students living outside the U.S. who have been accepted into the Robert D. Clark Honors College; and 2) international students who have completed at least one year at the Robert D. Clark Honors College. Preference will be given to incoming freshman.
How to Apply: Students must complete the application materials for admission to Robert D. Clark Honors College. No additional scholarship application is required. Visit the Robert D. Clark Honors College website for more information.

Graduate Teaching Fellowships

Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTFs) provide a tuition waiver and a stipend (salary) for the academic year. GTFs can include teaching, research or administrative positions. These awards are subject to United States income taxes.

Eligibility: GTF positions are available only to graduate students.

WORLD BANK GROUP FAMILY NETWORK, Washington, DC
The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund is an outreach program of the World Bank Family Network. The MMMF annually awards about six to ten grants of approximately $11,000 each.

Eligibility: Available to women from developing countries.

OREGON FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS, 330 Oregon Hall
Pan American Fellowship

The Pan American Fellowship Fund was established by the Oregon Federation of Women’s Clubs (OFWC) in 1946 to assist women graduates of accredited colleges in Latin America pursue graduate work at an Oregon college or university, and to assist women graduates of accredited colleges in Oregon pursue graduate work in Latin America. The fellowship award pays the recipient $325 per month for ten months (September through June.) For more information on the OFWC, visit their website at www.gfwc.org.

ORGANIZATION OF THE AMERICAN STATES, Washington, DC
Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund

The Rowe Fund is an Educational Loan Program of the Organization of the American States. This is an interest-free loan granted to students and/or professionals from Latin American and Caribbean countries to help them finance their higher education studies and research at accredited universities in the U.S. There is a maximum of $7,500 per academic period.

Eligibility: Available to undergraduate and graduate students from Latin American and Caribbean countries; and to professionals who are currently pursuing or wish to pursue advanced research studies or technical activities at the UO.
