Increasing UO Alumni Outreach Beyond US Borders

University of Oregon students hail from the farthest corners of the globe and virtually everywhere in between. Many of the UO’s alumni go on to careers around the world as well. To make sure these internationally oriented alumni stay connected to the UO, International Affairs (IA) coordinates outreach to over 11,000 alumni residing outside the US, in addition to about 3,000 former international students and 6,000 study abroad alumni within the US. IA’s International Alumni Programs works closely with University Advancement, the UO Alumni Association (UOAA) and the Office of Development to keep these global alumni in touch with the campus community.

Dr. Ghent Memory Book - A collection of thoughts, memories and special sentiments dedicated to the fond memory of Dr. Kenneth Ghent, professor of mathematics and the University of Oregon's first international student advisor.  Alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the University of Oregon are welcome to add comments to the Dr. Ghent Memory Book by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Publications

The UO has an enduring tradition of maintaining close relations with alumni from overseas through annual newsletters. Today UO alumni overseas and all former international students receive the International Alumni News, published jointly by the IA and the UOAA. Study abroad alumni stay up to date with UO internationalization through Flashback.

Alumni Events and Meetings Abroad

Alumni gatherings are a powerful tool in maintaining lifelong connections between UO alumni and their alma mater. International Alumni Programs coordinates large and small-scale alumni events to bring Ducks together worldwide. Engaged alumni leaders and UO faculty abroad are instrumental in carrying out many of these gatherings. In 2005-06, over 7,000 alumni received invitations to UO events or meetings with UO faculty traveling abroad. Since 2004, the UO has offered an average of five international alumni events per year in regions where higher percentages of UO alumni live.

International Alumni Groups and UOAA

Promoting UOAA membership and supporting UO alumni groups worldwide are important priorities for International Alumni Programs. International alumni contacts in many countries provide a point of connection for UO faculty and students abroad, for newly graduating students returning home, and for prospective students interested in learning more about Oregon. In 2006, the UOAA recognized the Japan Chapter for its 30-year history of significant contributions and active engagement with the UO.

Building Alumni Support Internationally

Our international and study abroad alumni understand the goodwill and lifelong connections established through international education and cultural exchange. Maintaining relationships with these members of the UO global community is a key component in advancing the university’s worldwide reputation and enriching our internationalization initiatives. As of 2005, approximately 10% of all international alumni had contributed to university fundraising initiatives. The Annual Giving Program, the Office of Development and International Alumni Programs expect to increase this participation with greater outreach during Campaign Oregon.

Outreach to Future International Alumni

Once a Duck...Always a Duck! Beginning with International Student Orientation, and continuing through the Senior Send-Off, International Affairs works to instill lasting connections and strong university spirit. International student groups, such as the Korean Students Association and Japanese Student Organization can provide opportunities for working with alumni.  Click here for a list of international student associations.
