Civil Unrest and Land Governance in Sub-Saharan Africa

Where: Knight Library Browsing Room

Please join Vice Provost for International Affairs Dennis Galvan and his mentor, UC Berkeley and IDS-Sussex Professor David Leonard, for a talk on Thursday, May 1, 12:30-2 pm, Knight Library Browsing Room.

Professor Leonard has lived and worked in Africa for fifty years, and is an expert  on governance, agrarian change, and African economic and social policy.  His most recent work, on which he will present, explores why some local land-tenure conflicts metastasize into national violence, often draped in ethnic difference, while other local land conflicts remain relatively quiet and manageable.  He considers in particular whether syncretic institutional arrangements account for this difference.

Light refreshments will be served at the talk.
